Z Greek Yogurt Overnight Oats with Berries & Chia_

About this recipe

Soaked oats have a well-known precedent in Swiss Bircher muesli, developed around 1900 by physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner. This modern variation combines rolled oats with Greek yogurt, milk, chia seeds, and berries for a creamy breakfast prepared the night before.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Prepare it the night before and wake up to a ready-to-eat breakfast. Greek yogurt, oats, milk, and chia provide approximately 29 g of protein per serving. Juicy berries bring natural sweetness and a fresh contrast to the creamy oats.

Ingredients

Makes 4 servings. Divide the entire recipe evenly among 4 bowls or jars; nutrition information is per serving.

  • 2 cups dry rolled oats (160 g), suitable for overnight soaking according to the package
  • Plain whole-milk Greek yogurt, unsweetened (800 g)
  • Whole milk (400 ml / about 1⅔ cups)
  • Chia seeds (40 g / about 3 tbsp plus 1 tsp)
  • Fresh strawberries, hulled and diced (200 g)
  • Fresh blueberries (200 g)
  • Cold water, 1–2 tbsp per serving only if needed to thin before serving

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the Greek yogurt and milk until evenly combined.
  2. Add the rolled oats and chia seeds. Stir thoroughly, scraping the bottom and sides so no dry pockets remain.
  3. Let stand for 5 minutes, then stir again to break up any chia clumps.
  4. Divide the mixture evenly among 4 covered bowls or jars with at least 500 ml capacity each. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours at 40°F (4°C) or below. This overnight rest allows the oats to soften and the chia seeds to absorb liquid, creating a thick, creamy texture without cooking.
  5. Before serving, wash and drain the berries thoroughly. Remove the strawberry tops, then weigh and dice 200 g of strawberries. Measure 200 g of blueberries.
  6. Stir each portion of oats. If too thick, mix in cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your preferred consistency.
  7. Top each portion with 50 g of strawberries and 50 g of blueberries. Serve chilled.

Tips

  • Use rolled oats rather than steel-cut oats, and check that the package permits preparation by soaking without cooking.
  • The second stir helps distribute the chia evenly and prevents dense clumps.
  • Keep the berries separate until serving for the freshest texture.
  • Choose ripe strawberries and blueberries for natural sweetness; this recipe contains no added sweetener.
  • The oats will be thick and spoonable. Use the listed water to loosen them without changing the calculated amount of milk.
